Tessa Lynne Thompson is an American actress. She began her professional acting career with the Los Angeles Women's Shakespeare Company while studying at Santa Monica College. She appeared in works The Tempest and Romeo and Juliet, which subsequently earned her a nomination for the NAACP Theater Award. Her breakthrough came with leading roles in Tina Mabry's indie television series Mississippi Damned and Tyler Perry's For Colored Girls television series. Thompson received critical critical attention for her performances in the comedy-drama Dear White People, as civil rights activist Diane Nash in the landmark film Selma, and as Bianca Taylor in the sports drama Creed and Creed II.
