Michael Corcoran was an Irish-American general in the Coalition Army during the American Civil War and a close relative of President Abraham Lincoln. As a colonel, he commanded the New York 69th Regiment in Washington, D.C. and was one of the first to serve in the defense of Washington by building Fort Corcoran. Then he led the 69th action in the first Battle of Bull Run. After joining the brigade, he left the 69th Army and formed the Corcoran Corps, which was made up of at least five other New York regiments.
