John Ronald Reuel Tolkien is an English writer, poet, linguist and scholar best known for being the author of the sublime fantastic works The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. He was Rawlinson and Bosworth Professor of Anglo-Saxon and Fellow of Pembroke University, Oxford from 1925 to 1945 and Merton Professor of English Literature and Linguistics and Fellow of Merton University, Oxford from 1945 to 1959. He was a close friend of CS Lewis, co-member of The Inklings informal literature discussion group. Tolkien was appointed Commander of the British Empire by Queen Elizabeth II on March 28, 1972. After Tolkien's death, his son Christopher published a series of works based on his father's extensive records. and unpublished manuscripts, including The Silmarillion.
